The importance of pitch inspections before play
The aim
To visually inspect the pitch for match or training readiness, and to remedy the situation if steps need to be taken before play.
The purpose
Why do we need to inspect the pitch and take action if necessary before play? It hopefully shouldn’t surprise you that there are several reasons why this process is critical:
How do I carry out inspections before play?
You can carry out your inspection visually by walking around the pitch. Here are the main things to look out for:
Stones, broken glass, needles, or any other such sharp objects
Loose divots or other surface damage such as that caused by pests or wildlife.
A hard surface due to ice or drought
Waterlogged surface
Surface levels (unfilled divots or sunken drainage trenches)
Animal faeces (definitely watch out for this one!)

Top tip from Key Account Manager Simon Johnson:
Be aware that moles will leave underground trenches that are not always visible from the surface. If you see mole hills near the playing surface check the surrounding area to ensure no trenches can collapse during play.
