Be up to the mark

Ensuring a pitch is marked out to the correct dimensions and with lines that are even and accurate is essential if a legal game is to be played.

Having a well-marked out pitch increases the chance of correct decisions being made by the referee, making for a fairer match. That’s why it’s important to follow The RFU’s standards for effective line marking.

Below are the main line markings for an association pitch. In addition to these, you may be asked to mark gridlines or special training areas.

For rugby union pitches, line marking involves creating a rectangular field with specific lines to define the playing area and key zones. Solid lines are used for the touchlines, try lines, halfway line, 22-meter lines, and dead-ball lines. Dashed lines mark the 5-meter, 10-meter, and 15-meter lines.

All lines must be marked using an approved paint for use on winter sports pitches. The use of Total Herbicides (weed killer), creosote, and hydrated lime, or other substances mixed with or used individually is against Health and Safety Regulations.  Burning in of lines should be avoided, no herbicides have label approval for this purpose. Any cost saving from marking less frequently will be negligible in comparison to the spends required to reinstate and seed the lines as they may erode through lack of grass coverage. In turn this can cause worn lines posing a risk to user safety.

Initial Setup:

When initially marking a pitch, it’s best to start with the corners and use the 3-4-5 method (measuring 3m, 4m, and 5m along the lines and diagonally to ensure right angles) or to use a GPS Line marker which will ensure all angles are correct and lines are straight.

Line Marking Equipment:

Various tools and machines are available for line marking, including transfer wheel machines, spray line markers, and even robotic options for high-precision or initial marking.

Paint:

Specialised line marking paints are available for grass pitches, and it’s important to use products designed for the surface type.

Line Marking Aids:

“Pitch line marking carrots” refers to durable, plastic markers, often spiral-shaped that can be used as permanent markers on sports pitches, particularly grass pitches. These “carrots” or “tufts” are inserted into the ground to indicate the boundaries of the field and remain in place during mowing and other maintenance. This reduces manhours, guesswork, and inaccurate line marking.

Professional Assistance:

For the initial marking and complex situations, professional line marking services can be beneficial and cost-effective.
