This guide explains what equipment you need, how to install it safely, and the checks to complete before every training session or game day.
A pair of regulation Rugby League posts
Ground hinges or post sockets (if fixed)
Post caps or safety plugs (if required)
Lifting equipment or enough volunteers to raise posts safely
Tools for tightening fixings
Check the ground hinges or sockets
Make sure they are clean, empty, and securely set in the ground.
Inspect for damage or movement.
Inspect the posts
No bends, cracks, rust, or sharp edges.
All fixings and joining sections present.
Clear the area
Ensure no players or spectators are around.
Ground should be firm and safe underfoot.
Always use enough helpers. Never attempt to lift rugby posts alone.
Lay the posts flat on the ground
Position them close to the sockets, pointing in the correct direction.
Assemble the upright sections on the ground
Join all upright sections before lifting.
Tighten all bolts/sleeves fully.
Lift from the top
A team of volunteers raises the posts slowly and steadily.
One person guides the base into the ground sleeve.
Lower into the ground sleeve
Once upright, gently lower the post until it sits securely in the socket.
Do not drop or force the base.
Secure the post
Use locking pins or bolts if your system includes them.
Shake the post gently to ensure stability.
7. Repeat for the second post
Check both posts are aligned with the goal line.
Use a string line if needed for accuracy.
Keep hands clear of pinch points.
Stop immediately if the post becomes unstable.
Wear gloves for better grip.
Never install posts in high winds.
Fit one protector around each upright once the posts are fully secure.
Protectors must be:
Thick enough to absorb impact
Free from tears, exposed foam, or damaged straps
Ensure they sit tightly around the post and touch the ground.
Secure all Velcro so they cannot rotate during play.
No slipping or movement during matches
No exposed edges or loose fixings
Replace old or worn protectors before use
Four corner flags (one in each in-goal corner)
Flexible, safe design (no solid poles or metal spikes)
Bright colours for visibility
Insert each flag firmly into the ground at the exact corner of the in-goal area
Ensure they are:
Upright
Flexible if players collide with them
Secure enough not to fall in light wind
Before every match or training session, volunteers should check:
Posts firmly secured
No movement or wobble
Fixings tight and undamaged
Fitted correctly
No tears, gaps, or slipping
Fully covering the uprights
All four flags in place
Flexible and safe
Secure in the ground
Remove protectors and store them dry
Lower posts slowly with enough helpers
Disassemble sections on the ground
Cap the post sleeves to prevent water or debris ingress
