Scarification

Scarification is performed to prevent the build-up of thatch or to control an existing thatch layer. Decaying organic matter can build up in the base of the grass plant, producing a thick impermeable layer that reduces the air, water and nutrient intake into the soil. Other reasons for scarification are to reduce populations of undesirable grasses and weeds.

Thatch removal from areas the size of football pitches is usually achieved, if and when required, by mechanical means.

Definition

Scarification can be as simple as the use of tow behind equipment like spring tines, chain harrows etc but more usually refers to the use of powered machinery that operates using a tractors rear link arms and power take off which transfers power from the tractors engine to the attached implement.

Remember….

✅ Carry out a risk assessment and ensure that you have the necessary personal protective equipment.

✅ Carry out the daily checks on the machine, this will differ from machine to machine but usually will include things like checking the fluid levels, tyres if needed, fuel levels and that guards are fitted. As each machine is different you should consult the manufactures handbook for guidance.

✅ Checks should also be made to the implement. It is important to set any mechanical equipment up correctly in order that severe damage to the soil surface does not occur. Always begin the operation with a shallow setting.

✅ Check the pitch before beginning the operation, ensure the surface is free from debris and that the conditions are suitable for the operation to proceed.

✅ Check the depth after starting and increase it if needed to achieve the desired outcome.

✅ Operate the equipment at the required speed and try to ensure even coverage of the surface.

✅ Once the whole surface is treated as required, take the equipment back to the garage/ maintenance facility and wash and clean down as needed and prepare the equipment for the next use.

All debris MUST be removed after scarification ideally the selected machine will come with a collection hopper as pictured at the beginning of this resource. However there are several other types of equipment on the market for this purpose, from sweepers to ride on rotary mowers with collection.
