Overseeding

Overseeding is the application of grass seed into an existing grass sward.

Reasons for overseeding include:

➡️ The need to increase grass coverage in a worn or thin area

➡️ To increase the population of sports specific grass species such as Perennial Ryegrass

In order to maximise the chances of good seed germination, soil and weather conditions should be considered before starting.

The desired grass species for winter pitches is typically Perennial Ryegrass and good seed mixes will typically contain at least 3 cultivars (varieties) of that particular species. Sometimes a bag of seed may also include another species that may offer different benefits such as shade tolerance.

The overseeding rate (i.e. the amount of seed required per square metre) will depend how sparse the surface is to begin with, a standard amount is 35g per square metre, however it could range from as little as 15g/square metre to as much as 50g/square metre for totally bare areas. You should check with your seed supplier for the recommended rate.

Key steps:

  1. Carry out a risk assessment and ensure you have the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). Carry out pre-start checks on all equipment.
  2. Ensure your machine is correctly calibrated before application (consult manufacturers guidebook if needed).
  3. Ensure you have selected the correct bags of seed. Lightly shake and mix before use.
  4. Check the pitch surface is free from debris and the conditions are suitable.
  5. Use guides or carefully follow machine tracks to ensure you obtain an even coverage and do not miss any areas.
  6. Operate the machinery at the recommended speed and distribution rate. If required make sure the implement is closed off at the end of each run and lifted prior to turning.
  7. Regularly check the amount of seed in the distribution hopper (in order to avoid running out of seed in the middle of a pass).
  8. Once completed, wash and clean down your equipment.
