Measuring Traction (Playing Quality)

Measuring Traction

๐Ÿ“Œ Using a Studded (Rotational) Traction Tester

This is the standard and most accurate method for assessing traction on natural and synthetic turf.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ How it works

  • A device with studs similar to a playerโ€™s boot is placed on the turf.

  • The device applies a downward load (to simulate bodyweight).

  • The traction tester is then rotated, and the torque required to cause rotational slip is measured.

๐Ÿ“ What is measured

  • Rotational resistance / torque value
    Usually expressed in Newton-meters (Nm).

  • Lower values = less grip

  • Higher values = more grip (but too high = injury risk)

๐Ÿ‘‰ Acceptable ranges (typical)

  • Football (natural turf): 25โ€“50 Nm

  • Rugby: similar range, with some allowances for higher values
