Measuring Ball Roll

📌 Ball roll (sometimes called ball speed or ball roll distance) is a key Performance Quality Standard (PQS) measurement in football because it shows how quickly and smoothly the ball travels across the surface. It directly reflects surface evenness, firmness, and turf quality.

🎯 Using a Ball Roll Ramp

A ball roll ramp is used to ensure the ball is released at a consistent angle, speed, and height every time.

👉 How the test works
  1. The ramp is placed on the pitch.
  2. A ball is released from the top without being pushed.
  3. The ball rolls across the turf until it naturally stops.
  4. The distance travelled is measured from the exit point of the ramp to where the ball stops.

👉 This ensures each test is consistent and not dependent on human force.

📝 Measuring Distance
Tools
  1. Ball roll ramp
  2. Measuring tape
  3. Markers/pins/flat discs
  4. Some clubs use lasers or digital systems, but tape is standard in PQS.

🗝️ Repeated Measurements Across the Pitch

Ball roll must be consistent, not just good in one area.

  • The ball roll is usually recorded in metres.
  • Grass that is too long, uneven, or soft → shorter ball roll
  • Hard, fast, even pitches → longer ball roll

👉 Football PQS normally expects 4–10 metres, depending on the standard played.

🗝️ Common sample points:
  • Centre circle
  • Each penalty area
  • Two wide areas
  • One diagonal or extra zone
🗝️ Method for each test area:
  • Ball rolled three times
  • All three distances recorded
  • The average is calculated

👉 This prevents one unusual roll from skewing results.

🎯 Directional Testing

Ball roll is assessed in two directions:

  • With the grain (or dominant mowing direction)
  • Against the grain

👉 This checks whether mowing, nap, or grass lay is affecting ball behaviour.

🗝️ Surfaces should not show a large directional difference.

📝Reporting as part of PQS

The report should include:

  • All individual roll distances
  • Averages for each area
  • Overall average
  • Directional differences
  • Comments on surface condition (e.g., drag, bobble, deviation)
