🗝️ A Grass Height Measuring Prism (as pictured), ruler or tape measure can be used to measure grass height, this is typically done from the base of the grass sward to the grass leaf tip. If grass height is not uniform the measurement should be based on the average height across the inspection area.
🗝️ Different sports have recommended grass height ranges. Measuring height confirms the pitch is cut to a level that matches the sport’s rules and expectations.
Typical examples:
Football: approx. 25–35 mm
Rugby: approx. 25–60 mm
Cricket outfields: approx. 10–20 mm
🗝️ Grass height influences:
Ball roll (shorter uniform grass = increased ball roll/speed)
Ball bounce (firmer and shorter = higher bounce)
Friction and drag (longer grass reduced ball roll/speed)
🗝️ Measuring grass height across multiple areas helps identify:
Uneven mowing
High spots or scalping
Shading or growth problems
Differences between high-traffic and low-traffic areas
🗝️ Grass height also reflects how well the pitch is coping with:
🗝️ PQS encourages maintenance practices that are consistent and sufficient to meet the desired standard. Measuring the height helps ensure:
